That they Might Shine Upon this Holy DayA Villanelle poem I wrote in honor of the victims of the Charleston Shooting.

On rebel land where they together pray,
To seek the will of Him who shed His right,
That they might shine upon this holy day.

Petitioning Almighty God that may
He heal the blinded and bring sudden sight
On rebel land where they together pray.

Beneath the cross in reverence they stay,
The burning bush before them blazes bright,
That they might shine upon this holy day.

These precious stones adorned in jars of clay
Become sheep shattered, crucified tonight
On rebel land where they together pray.

Our dismal sphere in blood-stained tears dims grey,
Transforming breath to monuments of light,
That they might shine upon this holy day.

Oh grave exhale! Watch the stone roll away;
These resurrected martyrs find delight
On rebel land where they together pray.

May we, behind left mourning this dismay,
Surrender our confederate dark fight
On rebel land where they together pray,
That they might shine upon this holy day.
