Lent Poem 9 – Villanelle

What shall be my offering –
to Him who holds heaven in hand?
What shall I bring this King?

Maybe a grain, a vine, a ling –
perhaps a bull with rancher’s brand?
Shall that be my offering?

Shall a song to Him I sing-
with the accompaniment of a band?
Is that what I shall bring this King?

A plot of land shall I bring –
with lush grass or golden sand?
Shall that be my offering?

A golden crown with sparkling ring –
and triumphant festival grand?
Is that what I shall bring this King?

Myself upon His altar fling,
a contrite heart He never banned,
So here’s my life oh gracious King,
I shall be Your offering.
